Meet Care Jo Vaughan, First Responder Ambassador
“More First Responders take their own lives than die in the line of duty.”
This true statement forever changed the life of Care Jo Vaughan. It was the genesis of her passion to help First Responders find safe, confidential, and culturally competent treatment for their PTSD, PTSI, trauma and addictions. Honored and named “The First Responder Ambassador” by the California State Legislature in 2019, Care has worked with various departments, organizations, and political leaders to make help available to the men and women she describes as “incredible.” Currently, she has assisted approximately 500 men and women find hope and help.
Care comes with a myriad of experience working with and on the behalf of First Responders nationwide. She is the former executive director of one of the nation’s first exclusively first responder treatment centers. Her credentials include earning a certification as an attorney’s assistant, an applied suicide intervention skills training credential, as well as obtaining RADT (Registered Alcohol and Drug Technician) certification. Care has authored several articles and speaks to groups and organizations regarding the need for support for the First Responders she considers her heroes. Recently, Care was honored to become a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Peer Support Team.
As Ambassador, Care is an advocate and supporter of all clients. From the first phone call when a person reaches out for help, until the completion of their treatment and beyond, her motto is: “No One Fights Alone”. She will be there for not only the First Responder, but their family as well.
“I envision a day,” she says, when ALL First Responders will have access to treatment for their mental health challenges and addictions, with no repercussions or stigma”.
